Sometime this week, my daughter celebrated her 9th birthday. She celebrated it by treating her classmates to lunch and giving away some loot bags. When she came home (and even until now), she couldn’t help gushing about her birthday. She said it was the best birthday ever and that she appreciates everything that we prepared for her on her special day. I am the happiest, of course. Because despite the busy schedule at work (two bigwigs arrived), I was able to deliver (at least on a personal level) of what was expected of me as a mother. 😛 And I have got to tell you about the cake! I hacked a minecraft-themed birthday cake! haha!
You see, I don’t know how to bake a cake. So when I found out (5 days before her birthday) that my daughter wanted to have a simple minecraft-themed birthday celebration, I did what I have to do and that is to look for anyone who can make a minecraft-themed cake for me. I found three possible suppliers. Their prices ranged from PHP2000 to PHP2500 (around $50). I thought, well, that costs a lot. But because I was cramming for everything, I gave in and started talking to them. One supplier didn’t reply at all. One bakeshop said they can make it but with incomplete cake toppers, so I said nah. Then, the last supplier, whom I thought was going to save me, declined at the very last minute. So what does a cramming mommy going to do? Make things happen! Proceed to Plan B.
So this was my Plan B:
- Buy a simple cake with frosting and if possible with a greeting. I bought the one below at PHP500 ($10) from Red Ribbon.
2. Buy and use Minecraft toys as cake toppers (voila! don’t they all use this? :P). I bought 2 sets (see below) because I’m preparing 2 cakes. One costs PHP150 ($3) while the other (bigger) one costs PHP299 ($6). The latter can be bought at Hannah’s (the party shop).
3. Use green frosting/icing for the grass. But this didn’t happen because I ran out of time looking for a ready-made icing. Then I got lucky. I found this green crystal sugar for only PHP40 ($0.80)! Hah!
4. Use the green sticks and a bit of masking tape for the toppers. In the picture below, I simply cut out the “minecraft” label from the toy’s packaging. 😛 Then I made a flag out of it by using the sticks and tape. Because I already had these supplies at hand, let’s just say I only used around PHP15 ($0.30) for this.
Voila! The first masterpiece! 😀
and the second! haha! The happy birthday topper only costs PHP18 ($0.36)
To sum it all up, each of these cakes should only cost around PHP872 ($17) or less!
So, how’s that for hacking a minecraft-themed cake? hihi. 🙂 How about you? Have you had any “mommyhacks” lately? Do leave a me a note. 🙂
